The decision is a huge step in the fight against counterfeit drugs and is being made by the Health Canada-led Canadian Border Force, the agency said. In June, a committee of the Canadian Border Force, led by the Health Canada-led International Security Agency, recommended that the government take a tougher approach to international importation, and give it more time to consider the issue.
The committee's recommendations also aim to tackle the increasing number of counterfeit products entering Canada, with counterfeit medicines being an increasingly common target for international criminal gangs.
But many Canadian customs officials say the decision to ban imports could lead to the worst consequences, including delays in the removal of Canadian exports, as well as the arrest of suspected foreign offenders.
Canadian customs officials have been monitoring the situation and have warned of increased risks of a sudden spike in counterfeit drug shipments.
The government has not received any official comment from the Canadian Border Force. It has also not commented on the implications of the decision.
“Our Canadian Border Force is committed to protecting our citizens and we are working with our partners to protect our borders,” said Scott Hahn, the director of customs services at the Canadian Border Force. “We are committed to supporting the safety and security of Canadian citizens and to ensuring a safe border.”
In Canada, an estimated 18,000 of the counterfeit drugs seized in the past year are counterfeit and may contain incorrect dosages or components, according to the agency.
Canadian customs officials say counterfeit drugs are often sold to unsuspecting consumers in foreign countries and could be harmful to health, and therefore, importation is the only option.
In January, customs officials in the Western Pacific area seized more than 100 counterfeit drugs and counterfeit products containing varying amounts of fake ingredients. In March, the Customs Office of the Inspector General of the Western Pacific Region seized more than 1,000 counterfeit products containing various components of counterfeit drugs.
Canadian customs officials say the importation is part of the country's efforts to protect the health of Canadians, and work with the Government of Canada to keep Canadians safe.

“Counterfeit drugs pose a huge threat to our citizens,” said Patrick Kelly, chief of the Office of National Drug Safety, the Canadian Border Force's regional directorate. “We will continue to protect Canadians and our citizens.”
Canada has also introduced a new system for importing drugs and medicines in the country, known as the importation program, which is meant to ensure that a drug is not being sold to a person without their consent.In November, a new system was introduced for drug exports to be made available through customs.
Canadian customs officials say the system is designed to make sure that the drug is made in the correct amount to avoid being caught and sold to unsuspecting consumers.
